  • Hello from the Netherlands

We’re a retired American couple who retired about two years ago, sold our home in Seattle, and bought a Dutch Canal Barge. Our plan is to cruise the canals of the Netherlands, Belgium, and France for the next 10-15 years. We’re currently based in Groningen about 2 hours north of Amsterdam.

The area looks wonderful! Are there charts that show the navigable canals in the area? Some of the canals look pretty narrow. Looks like many house boats in the area. I can see spending a lot o of time without doing a lot of traveling. Enjoy!

The Dutch government has detailed charts available paper and electronic. Remember that almost all the canals are at least 150 years old. Generally if you are under 35’ long draft of less than 3’ and can fit under a 9 foot bridge you can go anywhere. We’re 100’, 15’ beam, and draw about 4’ and can travel on about 60-70% of all canals in country.

Thanks for the info! We have talked about chartering a canal boat. Maybe we should give it a go!
